A Good Smoke

Fritz Wagner, German 1896 – 1939
Fritz Wagner was a painter of still life and genre scenes, usually depicting cavaliers or monks. He was born in Zurich and travelled throughout Europe. He studied at the Academie de la Brera de Milan. His subject and style of painting followed in the same footsteps of artists such as Ernest Meissonier and Adolphe Lesrel.

His choice of period costumes and settings were a deliberate move, helping to enhance the decorative value of his subjects and their surroundings. To each figure he gave a different character enabling the viewer to read into the situation presented.

Although he uses a soft palette, his skilled draughtsmanship ensures his figures are always well painted and natural, a talent which has made his paintings enduringly popular and highly collectable.
